In the past, where did humans tend to settle and why?

Humans mostly settled in places where there was a lot of rain, so they could farm. In China for example, people tended to settle in the east, because there they had a lot of rain, so people could farm. Some people were very successful, so they had people working for them. Because they were  free, they had time to try other things, like pottery, weaving, and many other things. There were also fewer people in the places where there was fewer rain because of farming. So as you can see people tended to settle in places where there was more rain, because there it was easier for farming.
